At Lighthouse Study Centre, we recognise and value the individuality of every learner. We understand that students learn in different ways and at different paces, and that some learners—including those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, anxiety, or other learning differences—may benefit from a more flexible, patient, and personalized approach to education.

Our home-based, calm learning environment is designed to reduce overwhelm and promote emotional safety for all students. We focus on each learner’s strengths rather than labels, offering clear structure, gentle guidance, and consistent one-on-one support. By working at a pace that suits the learner and adapting to their unique learning style, we help build confidence, independence, and a positive relationship with learning

With the realization that not every child absorbs knowledge in the same way, we strive to create a place that suits the square pegs, being unsuccessfully pushed into round holes.

Lighthouse Study Centre was established in 2010 to fill a growing need in the Pietermaritzburg education sector, for students who did not fit into a traditional learning environment. We have a passion for education that led to the investigation of alternative methods of schooling. We believe that many children were being placed in mainstream schools, due to a lack of alternative options for parents.

Partnering with two of South Africa’s leading home-study initiatives, gives us the opportunity to provide a safe learning space for children of all capabilities and learning speeds. Today we have around 50 children annually receiving an education in a way that suits their needs.
